Racines acadiennes - Les Losier: une lignée née dans la controverse by Denis Savard and in a personal email claims that Lazare Boucher and Augustin Roy, fils (son) are the same person.
Father Desjardins only estimated the date of birth, assuming he was born after a year or so marriage. In fact, the only documented age given (at 60) makes him born about 1725. Cleric genealogists have tendency to gloss over inconvenient facts (illegitimacy, kissing cousins, etc). A priest, great uncle of mine, used to distribute genealogies hiding the fact my gg-grandparents were first cousins once removed.
A few things lead us to conclude it was Lazare:
- After the infant was recognized by the father during the wedding, we loose all trace of Lazare.
- Although the church records there are very complete, Augustin's birth record is missing, While there was no reason for it. Being a leader in the community, it would have been eventful and would not be looked over...
- Being named Augustin too and taking over for his father as Milice captain, Augustin jr. has all the makings of an Elder son. Yet, Lazare is, since he was legitimized at the wedding.
- The academic PRDH (Programme de recherche en démographie historique de l'Université de Montréal) comes to the same conclusion.
In other words, Lazare disappears into thin air, while Augustin jr appears out of nowhere in the same timeframe. One and one makes two... in this case anyway.
