Capt. Zebulon M. Pike, with a company of 22 (Lt. James B. Wilkinson, Dr. John H. Robinson, three noncoms, 16 privates; and Baronet Vasquez, interpreter) set out from near St. Louis August 9, 1806, on an expedition to the West which began with a journey up the Missouri and Osage (by boat), convoying 51 Osages to their villages [in present Vernon county, MO]. (There were also two Pawnees to be escorted home.)
